Design and history

The monument was created in 1950 by sculptor Leonid Kristovsky . The sculpture, made of stone and concrete, holding a shield and fighting a dragon , had been ordered from Georgia and represented Saint GeorgeAfter completion, however, the order was canceled. By changing the headgear, the hand position and the exchange of a spear for a metal sword, Saint George became the Latvian hero Lāčplēsis. In 1953 the modified sculpture was put up at its current location. The sculpture was intended as a fountain figure, surrounded by a water basin and frogs. Water should come out of the dragon's mouth. Today this function no longer exists. In 2003 the sculpture was restored.
