The LHB S 400 series were two-axle diesel locomotives with single-axle drive from Linke-Hofmann-Busch from the first type program from 1959. A total of nine locomotives were built from 1959 to 1966. No locomotive has survived.

Linke-Hofmann-Busch launched the first type program in 1959, which included locomotives with an output of 200 hp, 400 hp and 600 hp. The LHB S 400 had a single-axle drive with two machine systems, the locomotive with 600 hp was a four-axle locomotive with a single-axis drive and four machine systems.

The locomotives were used in industrial companies in Germany or as rental locomotives from the manufacturer.

The front-end locomotives had a central driver's cab, beveled front ends and the wheelset bearings with an inner frame with the power transmission executed in the frame. Some locomotives were given ballast weights to increase the friction weight.

The two-machine system consisted of a six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine from MAN , which fed its power to a hydromechanical transmission from EMG Elektro Mechanik GmbH, which was founded on June 22, 1946 as a subsidiary of the National Automobile Company (NAG), a wholly owned subsidiary of AEG , gave. The engines were each located in the front end, the gearboxes under the cab floor. These gearboxes were responsible for numerous failures and many gearbox repairs. German railway operating company

Two locomotives built in 1961 were intended as rental locomotives for the works railway of the Dolomitwerke Salzhemmendorf because the works wanted to build another kiln. For this purpose, they were equipped with multiple controls so that two locomotives could operate. They were also equipped with ballast weights to increase the friction weight. When the plans for the use of the locomotives came to nothing, they were offered to the Deutsche Eisenbahn-Betriebsgesellschaft (DEBG).

At DEBG, the weights were removed in 1963 so that the locomotive could be used on the Voldagsen – Delligsen railway line . Numerous breakdowns required four gearbox repairs by the manufacturer up to 1967, each of which had to cost DM 20,000 . The locomotives were in use on the line until the end of operation in July 1967.

In 1967 they came to Ewald Kohlen AG in Recklinghausen via an intermediary, where they were given the company numbers D13 and D14. On April 6, 1982, they were taken over by Ruhrkohle AG and used as V 443 and V 444 at VEM Erz und Stahl in Essen until 1989 and then turned off.
