LINK (ATM network)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

LINK is a network of ATMs in the United Kingdom supported by 37 institutions , which as of the end of 2015 comprised 70,600 ATMs (including 52,800 that do not charge direct customer fees). Almost all machines in Great Britain are connected to the LINK network.

In 2013, more than 2 billion cash withdrawals and more than 1 billion other transactions (including PIN changes, account balance inquiries, mobile phone credit top-ups and donations) were made in the LINK network.

Withdrawals from British ATMs with British bank cards that are not made at the ATMs of the issuing bank will be made via the LINK network. The chip cards are equipped with their own EMV application from LINK, which can coexist with applications such as Visa (Debit), (Debit) Mastercard or UnionPay .

history

LINK was founded in 1986 as an ATM network of smaller banks and building societies in Great Britain. In 1989, the competing ATM network Matrix was taken over by LINK.

At the beginning of the 2000s, the major banks Barclays and HSBC finally joined the association and stopped collecting third-party ATM fees. The ATMs of almost all commercial banks can now be used free of charge for withdrawals in the LINK network.

Machine fees

A withdrawal in the LINK network may only be charged with a fee either by the card issuer (issuer fee) or by the machine operator (surcharge). Machine operators who charge direct customer fees must clearly indicate this and inform the user before the withdrawal. If a direct customer fee is charged, there is no interchange fee in favor of the machine operator.

Financial inclusion

An important focus of LINK's work is the financial inclusion of economically weaker citizens.

With more than seven million UK consumers paying almost exclusively in cash, LINK and the members of the network are working to introduce free ATMs in areas where free cash withdrawals are currently limited. Another focus of work is the provision of machines that provide banknotes with small sums (especially 5 GBP notes) for withdrawal, since many consumers can better control their spending with low-value banknotes.

Norbert Häring considers financial inclusion to be a "cover word for pushing back cash" with the intention of "improving the surveillance of citizens."
