La Cara de Barcelona

La Cara de Barcelona ( Catalan for “The Face of Barcelona”) is a 15 meter tall monumental sculpture in Barcelona . The design comes from the American pop art artist Roy Lichtenstein , and the sculptor Diego Delgado Rajado was responsible for the execution in 1992.

Alternative names

The sculpture is also known under the name El Cap de Barcelona (Catalan for "The Head of Barcelona"). The Roy Lichtenstein Foundation uses the English title Barcelona Head (German: "Barcelona head").

Location

The sculpture stands at the intersection of Passeig de Colom and Pas de Sota Muralla streets on the border between the Old Port (Catalan: Port Vell ) and the La Barceloneta district .

Style and backgrounds

The approximately 15 meter high sculpture stands on a 5 meter high base. In the style of Pop Art , it depicts the face of a woman in a very abstract form. Lichtenstein uses his comic-like design language, which in this case shows reminiscences of the design language of Joan Miró . At the same time, Lichtenstein pays tribute to Catalan modernism and its most important representative Antoni Gaudí through the use of Gaudí-esque ceramic fragments, so-called trencadís . In contrast to normal sculptures, which have a three-dimensional appearance, La Cara de Barcelona should convey a two-dimensional impression due to its lack of depth, as we know it from painting. The sculpture was erected on the occasion of the 1992 Summer Olympics , when Barcelona wanted to present itself as a modern metropolis.
