La Jolla Shores is a residential area and stretch of beach in the La Jolla district of San Diego in the US state of California .

location

The approximately one mile long beach is located north of the cliffs at La Jolla Cove , Black's Beach, and downtown La Jolla, south of Torrey Pines State Park . The famous Pier des Scripps Institution of Oceanography is to the north of the La Jolla Shores. The residential area of La Jolla Shores is directly east on the beach.

use

Since the water depth on this stretch of beach increases only slowly and the offshore reefs keep the waves small, the beach is a popular tourist destination. It is also a popular starting point for kayakers and divers. Some of the episodes of the Beach Patrol TV series were filmed here.

San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park

Information board about the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park

Seaward from La Jolla Shores is the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park , which extends to Black's Beach in the north. It was founded in 1970 and covers an area of approximately 24 square kilometers of ocean floor and coast. There are two artificial reefs in the park, one at a depth of 21 meters and the other at a depth of twelve meters. Behind the shelf slope, the sea depth rises abruptly to around 150 meters, in La Jolla Canyon it even reaches 180 meters near the coast. A diverse marine community has formed on this edge, and whales can sometimes be seen here from the beach. On the outer edges of the slope there are extensive forests of kelp . The park is the most popular dive spot for snorkelers and scuba divers in San Diego County .
