La Marañosa is a district 30 kilometers south of Madrid . The site was the site of the Battle of Jarama on February 5, 1937 during the Spanish Civil War .

The nationalist troops consisted of around 25,000 infantry , including troops from the Spanish Legion . In addition, General Emilio Mola had ten cavalry squadrons and troops from the Condor Legion . The primary aim of the offensive was to capture the western bank of the Jarama River and the adjacent heights of La Marañosa. Then the republican lines were to be broken and the cities of Vaciamadrid and Arganda del Rey to be taken.

The nationalist offensive began on February 5 with attacks on republican positions on the western bank of the Jarama in the valley between La Marañosa and Ciempozuelos . The nationalists advanced in mobile groups and totally overwhelmed the surprised Republicans. Carlos Cabanillas was in command of the center of the attack . The commander on the left flank in the northern area was Ricardo Rada and on the right flank in the southern area Francisco Garcia-Escámez . Subsequently, on February 6, Francisco García-Escámez overran the republican positions at Ciempozuelos in the southern combat area. In this attack the XVIII. Republican Brigade 1,800 men. Then the nationalists, under the command of Ricardo Rada, conquered the hills of La Marañosa. These hills made it possible to dominate large areas with a crossing of the Jarama with artillery and machine gun fire, as well as the hill of Pingarrón . The two Republican battalions stationed on the hill of La Marañosa , the 18th and 48th Republican Battalions, were worn out to the last man.

On March 17th, the Irish Brigade was transferred to La Marañosa. The Irish Brigade remained stationed in La Marañosa for a few months. Due to the threat of the Irish government to revoke the Irish citizenship of the members of the brigade, the brigade was replaced by an Italian unit.
