The La Serena reservoir is a dam with a hydroelectric power plant in the Badajoz province in Spain . Together with the Zújar dam , the La Serena dam creates a contiguous reservoir from the lower Zújar reservoir and the upper La Serena reservoir. The Zújar dam limits the reservoir to the west, while the Serena dam a little further upstream creates an additional height difference between the lower and the upper part of the artificial lake.

The reservoir is located on the Zújar , a tributary of the Río Guadiana in western Spain. In the far south-east the reservoir extends to Andalusia . The Serena Reservoir is 139.49 km² (13,949 hectares) and has a volume of up to 3.219 million m³. The build-up to today's level has continued since the 1990s. The Zújar reservoir has an additional 14.49 km² (1,449 hectares) of water surface.

The reservoir is the second largest on the Iberian Peninsula, only the Alqueva reservoir in neighboring Portugal is larger. Both are among the largest reservoirs in Western Europe.

The locations of the structures are:

  • Zujar Dam (lower) - 38.91689 N, 5.47885 W (gravity dam, 61 meters high and 350 meters long)
  • Serena Dam (upper) - 38.91268 N, 5.41358 W (gravity dam, 91 meters high and 580 meters long)

The EX-103 road leads over both dams.
