La Strada (Graz)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

La Strada is a 9-day international street and puppet theater festival in Graz with an average of 100,000 visitors per year. It has taken place every year in August since 1997 at various venues in Graz and partly also in other cities and towns (2015: Leibnitz , Stainz , Weiz - around 40 km away). Next date: July 29 - August 6, 2016.

A program booklet describes the individual events, including their suitability for children, and provides a detailed calendar. A program mobile app for smartphones, for example , has been available since 2014 . The La Strada logo can be found during or before the approximately 10-day duration of the festival on flags on the masts of Herrengasse and on typically orange balloons distributed to children. A small single-axle caravans repeatedly served as conspicuous in the pedestrian area information desk, this came - with the word game "load wheel (a)" - from 2014 a three-wheeled Christiania- cargo bike with electric auxiliary drive and a hinged to the ramp big box between the front wheels.

Some of the performances take place in parks, streets and squares ( pedestrian zones or areas temporarily closed to vehicles), mostly with free admission. In contrast, those in closed rooms and particularly complex ones are usually paid. In addition to the opening and closing, there are rather few events that are unique, but most of the performances are played multiple times. Walking acts occur rather surprisingly in an area of the city center and move the audience to wander with them.

A player on the facade just above the business portals in the central Herrengasse was spectacular and clearly visible. Dancers descending and abseiling, repeating themselves from a large wall, performed a vertical ballet on Freiheitsplatz. Movable objects from simple bicycles to the trapeze carried by a helium balloon are also used by actors. Viewers are sometimes involved intensively, such as when an unsuspecting volunteers of two stilt-goers from Stainzer is swiftly raised the main square and stopped suddenly on a private balcony on the first floor. They often play in the mornings right through to the dark of the night.
