La Oreja de Van Gogh ( Spanish for The Ear of Van Gogh ) is a Spanish pop band that was founded in 1996 by young musicians from San Sebastián who met at university.

The guitarist Pablo Benegas, the bassist Álvaro Fuentes, the keyboardist Xabi San Martín and the drummer Haritz Garde played mostly alternative songs before Amaia Montero joined the band and replaced Garde as singer.

Her first album Dile al sol was released in 1998. It topped the Spanish charts and was awarded the Premio Ondas al Artista del Año . After numerous tours, the band released two more albums El viaje de Copperpot and Lo que te conté mientras te hacias la dormida and two DVDs: La oreja de Van Gogh with material from their first two recordings and the live DVD Lo que te conté mientras te hacias la dormida, Gira 2003 .

The songs are mostly about love, friendship and everything that occurs in the relationship between two people, and have so far mostly been written by Amaia Montero in collaboration with Pablo Benegas and Xabi San Martín.

In April 2006 the band released their fourth album Guapa . This already reached number 1 on the Spanish album charts in the first week.

On November 19, 2007, the band announced in their official weblog that the singer Amaia Montero will be separating from the group after eleven years to start a solo career. Leire Martínez, finalist of the Spanish version of the talent show Factor X , was introduced as the new singer on July 14, 2008 in the Casa de América in Madrid . The first album in the new formation was released on September 2, 2008 in stores. The first single with singer Leire Martínez is called El último vals .
