The Lac de Champex is a lake in the municipality of Orsières in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It is about 30 meters below the Col de Champex . Its area is 11 hectares. The small holiday village of Champex-Lac is located on its banks .

Emergence

The lake lies between two moraines . At the end of the last Ice Age ( Würm Cold Age ) about 10,000 years ago, the Glacier du Val d'Arpette in the west and the Glacier du Val d'Entremont in the east retreated, leaving behind the moraines.

nature

In the west the lake is bounded by a valuable moor area. The different plant communities occurring there illustrate all the evolutionary stages of water landing: Flat moor on the lakeshore ( Seggenried with free water) and high moor in more distant zones (peat bog). The Champex-Lac peat bog is the only one in the canton of Valais where mountain pine grows in places . The small-fruited cranberries can only be found here in Valais. The flat and raised bogs are of national importance and have been under cantonal protection since 1997.

tourism

The lake is the real heart of Champex-Lac and is used intensively for tourism. Pedalos , rowing boats and stand-up paddling can be rented on its bank . The lake, which is pleasantly warm for a mountain lake in summer, is accessible to swimmers in several places. The lake is also very popular with anglers. A promenade for around the lake. You can skate on the lake in winter.
