Continuation of the report

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The continuation of the report is the first novel by the German writer Ror Wolf . It was written between 1959 and 1964 and was published by Suhrkamp Verlag in 1964 . Continuation of the report is considered to be an example of a German-language nouveau roman .

content

Continuation of the report has no clear, chronological plot. The focal point of the novel is a celebratory meal in which the first-person narrator and some friends take part. It also describes how the narrator makes his way to this meal. Despite an apparent chronology, it is not clear in which order the storylines run or whether they do not even take place at the same time. Of the numerous characters who take part in the meal, only men named Krogge and Wobser are of importance, who tell stories over and over again, the truth of which, however, is just as questionable and which sometimes appear to be mere associations or fantasies. Among other things, it involves the life and death of Wobber's father and the killing of the cook. In the end, the first-person narrator arrives at the feast that, paradoxically, he has been attending all along.

shape

Continuation of the report is very different from traditional narrative and language patterns. Through several stylistic peculiarities, Wolf draws the reader's attention less to the story than to the language that shapes this story. In this, the continuation of the report is close to the Nouveau Roman project.

Two linguistic strategies that contrast each other are striking. On the one hand, these are colloquial features. Wolf often uses insertions in his sentences, such as “I would say”, “maybe”, “I think”, “how should I say”, “why not” etc. The syntax is also often based on everyday language. Spelling and punctuation do not always follow the norm, but are adapted to the respective context.

At the same time, however, the continuation of the report is characterized by meticulously constructed language. This becomes clear in “word clusters” and “improvisations”. Many of the lists of nouns are encyclopedic , often from the fields of zoology and culinary arts .

Both techniques have in common that they make "perceptual doubts [...] and cognitive weaknesses" clear.

reception

After its publication, the novel received numerous and mostly positive reviews. He was discussed by Helmut Heißenbüttel and Marianne Kesting , who both attested the book to have a special linguistic effect. Peter Handke considered a continuation of the report "in the German-speaking region [for the first serious attempt to find a new linguistic form for this stream of consciousness ". The text was therefore often attributed to the Nouveau Roman , but according to another view, its spelling goes back to the tradition of Mannerism .
