The lake is located in the catchment area of the Beaver River . The Lac la Plonge is drained by the short river Rivière la Plonge, which flows to the west . The lake has an area of 257 km². The Lac la Plonge is of glacial origin and lies in the area of the boreal forest belt not far from the Canadian shield .
The Saskatchewan Highway 165 leads on the northwestern shore. There is also a leisure resort there.
