List of breeds of chicken

The laughing hen , also called Ayam ketawa ( Indonesian ) or Manu 'gaga' ( Buginese ), is a long- tailed crow from South Sulawesi in Indonesia . The name is based on the similarity of the crow's cry with the voice of a laughing or slurping person. Like the Ayam pelung , they are mainly kept for their ornamental value.

origin

Laughing chickens have been bred on Sulawesi for a very long time and, due to their extraordinary crowing properties, their breeding was reserved only for the royal family and the nobles. Today, laughing chickens are widespread across Indonesia and were introduced to Europe a few years ago.

features

Crow cry

The stuttering repetition of the individual syllables is characteristic of the roar of the laughing chicken. Different strokes of laughing chickens are distinguished according to their crow call. A long-crowing variant ("Dangduttyp") crows an average of 30 seconds. There is also a fast-interval type called "Garetek", a slower type called "Gaga", and a long-interval type called "Dodo".

shape

Laughing chickens have a classic country fowl shape. They are slim and light, so that the hens are sometimes as light as bantams . The comb can be simple or formed as a rose comb.

colour

The legs are mostly slate blue, although there are variants with lighter colors.

The following colors are defined on Sulawesi:

  • Bakka: white basic color with black base and orange-red feathers
  • Lapping: porcelain
  • Ceppaga: mixed black and white, but the body is white and the base of the neck is black
  • Corro: black base color with yellow and white feathers
  • Ijo Buota: greenish, shiny black base color with alternating red-brown and black feathers
  • Bori Tase: red-brown with golden yellow spots

Competition crows

As with Ayam pelung and Bergischer Kräher , national and regional crowing events are organized on a regular basis. The participating laughing chickens are divided into price categories depending on the manner of crowing.

Special association and recognition

In the German-speaking countries there is no special association for the laughing hens. The laughing hen is not recognized as a breed within European pedigree poultry breeding.
