Lacus Autumni - Latin for autumn lake - is a solidified lava lake on the moon , the origin of which resembles the larger Maria . The designation was officially confirmed by the International Astronomical Union in 1970.
The dark gray basalt surface has an average diameter of 183 kilometers and is located on the western edge of the moon side facing the earth at the selenographic coordinates 12 ° south and 83 ° west between the Montes Rook and the Montes Cordillera .
