Lacus Somniorum - Latin for lake of dreams - is a frozen lava lake on the moon , which is similar to the larger Maria in terms of its origin . The name comes from the Italian astronomer Giovanni Riccioli (1598–1671) and was officially established by the International Astronomical Union in 1935.
The basaltic plain with an irregular outline has a mean diameter of 384 kilometers, an area of about 70,000 km² and is located in the northeast of the moon side facing the earth. The formation is connected to the Mare Serenitatis in the southwest and Lacus Mortis in the north .
