Lacus Mortis - Latin for lake of death - is a frozen lava lake on the northeastern front of the moon between the Mare Frigoris in the north and the Mare Serenitatis in the south, which is similar to the larger Maria in terms of its origin . The name comes from the Italian astronomer Giovanni Riccioli (1598–1671) and was officially established by the International Astronomical Union in 1935.

The basaltic plain has an average diameter of 151 kilometers, an area of around 21,000 km² and is located in the northeast of the moon side facing the earth at the selenographic coordinates 45 ° 00 'north and 27 ° 12' east. The formation resembles a flooded crater. To the east at its center is the Bürg crater, 40 kilometers in diameter . The ridge system of the Rimae Bürg runs on its bottom, which also breaks through the wall edge of Lacus Mortis at one point.
