The Mare Serenitatis (Latin for "sea of ​​serenity") is a lunar sea east of the Mare Imbrium on the Earth's moon . It is located in the Serenitatis Basin .

Mare Serenitatis borders the Mare Tranquillitatis in the southeast and the Mare Vaporum in the southwest.

The Montes Haemus Mountains stretch along the southwestern edge of the basin . Apollo 15 landed further west of the mare . To the southeast of its edge lie the Montes Taurus , near which Luna 21 and Apollo 17 landed.

The sea lies in the middle on the selenographic coordinates 28 ° 00 'N, 17 ° 30' E. The mean diameter is 707 km.

Cultural

The Mare Serenitatis is also popularly regarded as a man's eye in the moon .

In the novel Heliopolis by Ernst Junger , a celebration of the Mare is mentioned at the beginning and the plot identified as playing in the future.
