The Montes Haemus are a mountain range on the Earth's moon . They are surrounded in the southeast by the Mare Tranquillitatis , in the northeast by the Mare Serenitatis and in the west by the Montes Apenninus .
The name was derived by Johannes Hevelius from the former Greek name for the Balkan Mountains ("Haemus, mons Thraciae") and officially established by the International Astronomical Union in 1961. The mountains are up to 2.4 km high, and the diameter of the mountain ridge is around 400 km.
