Ladra [ 'Laðra ] is the name of a male legendary figure from the Lebor Gabála Érenn ("Book of the Landing of Ireland") in the Celtic mythology of Ireland .

mythology

According to tradition, Ladra is the helmsman of the ship that takes Noah's granddaughter Cessair to Ireland 40 days before the flood . In addition to Cessair, there are 50 women on board and only three men with Ladra, Bith and Fintan mac Bóchra . After landing, Ladra takes seventeen of the fifty women as wives, the other two men likewise as many. When the flood comes, everyone drowns, with the exception of Fintan, who is the only one who witnessed all subsequent landings by the Partholon , Nemed , the Firbolg , the Túatha Dé Danann and finally the Milesians .

Patricia Monaghan describes him as the brother of Cessair, who either found death trying to satisfy all of his 17 wives or fighting a boar. He is also said to have quarreled with Cessair about the size of his dominion.
