Occurrence
The species grows epiphytically on free-standing trees in the forests of Mexico , Guatemala and Honduras at altitudes of 500 to 1500 meters. In the natural locations it is often directly exposed to sunlight.
features
Like all species of the genus, Laelia anceps grows sympodially . The pseudobulbs are egg-shaped, 5 to 7 cm in size and compressed at the sides, and each have one or two ribbon-shaped leaves about 15 cm long. The inflorescence reaches a length of 30 to 70 cm and bears two to five flowers. These are variable in shape and color. They are usually pale to medium-strength violet-pink with a strong purple central lobe and a white-rimmed, yellow throat with red lines. Their diameter is 8 to 10 cm, the sepals are about half as long as the petals.

One can distinguish between two subspecies:
- Laelia anceps subsp. anceps : It occurs in Mexico, in southeastern Guatemala and in southern Honduras.
- Laelia anceps subsp. dawsonii (J.Anderson) Rolfe : It occurs in the Mexican states of Guerrero and Oaxaca.
