The Puyehue Lake is a large lake in southern Chile .

It is located in the Los Lagos and Los Ríos regions . The lake is located between the towns of Entre Lagos and Licán .

The Lago Puyehue has an area of ​​around 156 km² and a maximum depth of 135 m. The lake is an old glacial lake from the Ice Age with crystal clear water. There are many wonderful beaches on the lake, such as B. in the Mantilhue area . It is the source of the Pilmaiquén River .

In the northeast of the lake is the 4 km² island of Fresia , which is overgrown by ancient trees. To the east of the lake is the active volcano Puyehue, 2236 m high . There are hot springs and geysers in this area . This is also where the 107 km² Puyehue National Park is located , partly in the Antillanca area , with Ulmo and Coigüe forests and a very rich fauna.

history

Lago Puyehue was first visited by Francisco de Villagra in 1553 . The town of Entre Lagos was founded in 1938. The Puyehue National Park was established in 1941.

economy

Tourism, fishing and forestry play an important role in the area. The lake is ideal for sailing and fishing. There are campsites on the banks.

Several hydropower plants are used to generate energy in the area. The Panamericana passes near the lake.
