The maximum of 45 square kilometers and of smaller volcanic mountains umstandene Lake Güija is about 430 to 440 m high altitude Border Sea between the Central American countries Guatemala and El Salvador . The Hidroeléctrica Guajoyo hydropower plant is located on the Salvadorian side .
location
The larger eastern part of Lago de Güija is located in the Salvadoran department of Santa Ana and the smaller western part in the Guatemalan department of Jutiapa .
Rivers
The Lago de Güija is fed by several rivers; the largest are the Río Angue and the Río Tamazulapa . The approximately 15 km long outflow of the lake flows into the Río Lempa .
purpose
The reservoir is used to regulate the water in the Río Lempa, to supply drinking water to the surrounding communities, to generate electricity and for recreational purposes (fishing, swimming, boat tours).
history
The region was already settled in pre-Hispanic times; In 1924 several petroglyphs were found on Isla Igualtepeque , including the so-called "Stone of the Sun and the Moon" ( piedra del sol y la luna ), the exact age of which is unknown.
