description

Dam of the Lago di Sauris

The Lago di Sauris is a reservoir near the municipality of Sauris in the Carnic Alps . The lake is fed by the Lumiei River and the Rio Poch and has a volume of more than 70 million cubic meters of water. At the time of construction, the dam was the tallest in Italy and the second tallest in Europe.

history

The construction of the dam, the "Diga del Torrente Lumiei", for the power station in the Lumiei Valley began in 1941. Around 300 New Zealand prisoners of war were used as slave labor for the construction . 20 workers were killed during the construction of the dam. Before the damming of the lake could begin in 1948, the district of La Maina with its farms, stables, hay barns, two mills, a church, a school and a retail store had to be cleared. 15 families with around 60 people were relocated, the church was demolished and rebuilt in a higher part of the village. If the lake is drained at regular intervals for maintenance work on the wall - as was last done in 1992 and 2013 - it releases the remains of La Maina .
