The Lago di Valvestino is an artificial fjord-like reservoir with a 124 m high dam in the northern Italian region of Lombardy in the province of Brescia a few kilometers west of Lake Garda as the crow flies .
The Valvestino valley is also called the Vesta valley. The Monte Palotto (1,369 m) and the Mte. Fassane (1,188 m) border the lake in the north, in the south there are the mountains Mte. Pracalvis (1,164 m), Mte. Alberelli (1,166 m) and Mte. Albereletti (844 m ). The lake is located in the heart of the Gardesana Occidentale nature reserve , the landscape is unspoilt and unspoilt, and dense forests offer protection for rare animals. In the wild side valleys you can find many caves (only accessible on foot or by boat).
The dam in Ponte Pola, completed in 1962, can contain 52 million m 3 of water and has an apex length of 283 m. The lake is isolated and has not yet been developed for tourism, as it can only be reached via a narrow mountain pass from Gargnano or from Idro on the lake of the same name. There are no larger towns on Lake Valvestino. The winding mountain road is a favorite route for motorcyclists.
The lake feeds an electricity plant in San Giacomo in the municipality of Gargnano , which is installed in a cave at a height of 70 m above Lake Garda. The output of the pumped storage plant is 137 megawatts, the average annual production is 80 gigawatt hours. That is the power consumption of around 30,000 resident family households.
