Lagoa do Congro ( Portuguese ' conger eel ') is a lake in Portugal on the Azores island of São Miguel in the district of Vila Franca do Campo . The almost round lake is located in a crater at about 518 m above sea level and represents a maar . It has an area of 4.35 hectares and is 275 m long in diameter. Its catchment area is only 0.34 km².
The lake is part of a protected area called the Protected Area for the Management of Habitat or Species . Above all, it is considered a valuable habitat and feeding place for migratory birds. It is home to carp (Cyprinus sp.) , River perch (Perca fluviatilis) and the great crested newt (Triturus cristatus carnifex), which is protected under the Bern Convention .
Its water is beautiful to look at because of its deep green color. However, it is not advisable to take a bath as the water is not clean. It's so nutrient-dense that it's classified as eutrophic .
A few meters further on there is another lake called Lagoa dos Nenúfares in the same crater .
