The Lagoa do Peixe is a lagoon in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil .

National park

A 344 km² national park, founded on June 11, 1986, surrounds the lake. The national park is located in the area of Tavares , Mostardas and São José do Norte . The Lagoa do Peixe is one of the most important areas for migratory birds south of the equator, with 26 species from the northern hemisphere wintering here. The coastal ecosystem is shaped by tides and sandy plains. It is well preserved with swamps, lagoons, beaches, dunes and forests with plants that love sandy and sometimes salty soil. Due to the varied terrain, the area is home to many species, especially birds. In this warmer region come from the southern winter u. a. Flamingos , whales , penguins and sea ​​lions .
