Lahunpapyri

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lahunpapyri is the modern name for various papyrus finds that were made at the end of the 19th century near El-Lahun , in the remains of the ancient city of Hetep-Sesostris . They date to the end of the 12th and 13th dynasties (around 1850–1750 BC).

Find history

Much of these papyri were found during the excavations of Flinders Petrie , who explored the site from 1888-89. These papyri are now in the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archeology at University College London . A few years later, locals found more papyri in a mound of rubble and sold them at the art market, where parts were bought by Ludwig Borchardt for the Egyptian Museum in Berlin . Other parts are said to be in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. A selection of the papyri in the Petrie Museum were published by Francis Llewellyn Griffith just a few years after their discovery , and a comprehensive publication has been made in several volumes since 2002. The Berlin papyri, on the other hand, have only been published sporadically so far.

content

Because of the diverse sites in the ancient city, the content of these papyri is also very different. The Berlin papyri come from a heap of rubble next to the city and apparently come from a temple archive, because the content of these papyri deals primarily with the affairs of the temple administration. There are numerous letters from temple employees and lists of statues and festivals. A papyrus with a Sothi date is particularly important , which allows the finds to be classified in the chronology of the Middle Kingdom .

The papyri Petrie found come from all parts of the city and are therefore very different in terms of content. There are many letters, fragments of literary (e.g. The Tale of Hai ), religious, mathematical, legal and medical texts. Accounts represent a very large part.
