salt lake |
Lake Baghdad is a salt lake on the island of Rottnest Island in the Australian state of Western Australia .
geography
The lake is around 1.25 kilometers long and 280 meters wide. It is not far from the north shore of the island, 110 meters from Geordie Bay . It used to be connected to the neighboring lakes, Lake Vincent and Lake Herschel . It is separated from the latter by a strip of land around 40 meters thin and 400 meters long. A sandbar about 200 meters long and only a few meters wide separates Lake Vincent.
In contrast to smaller lakes such as neighboring Lake Negri to the southwest and Pink Lake south of Lake Vincent, Lake Baghdad does not dry out in summer.
history
In 1830 the now separate lakes were called Threefold Lake . When Lake Herschel was cut off, the body of water was called Settler's Lakes . The name is derived from the first white settlers on Rottnest Island who lived on the shore of the lake. The origin of the name Lake Baghdad is unclear.
nature
The lake is ideal for watching birds such as the common wagtail ( Cladorhynchus leucocephalus ), the tern genus Thalasseus and the plover species Charadrius ruficapillus .
