Thalasseus is a genus of the tern family(Sternidae). Thalasseus literally means "creature of the sea" and comprises a total of six recent species that are distributed and known worldwide. The genus Thalasseus wasdescribedby Friedrich Boie asearly as 1822, but subsequently the species of the genus were usually assigned to the genus Sterna . Molecular biological studiespublished in 2005,however, supported the consideration as an independent genus.

features

Thalasseus is a genus of medium-sized to large terns. A special characteristic is the thin and pointed beak, which is often yellowish or orange in color. All species have a shaggy crest, which is why they are also known as “crested terns” in English.
