The lake callabonna is a dry salt lake in northeastern Australian state of South Australia .

geography

The lake, which is about 120 km southwest of the border triangle South Australia - New South Wales - Queensland , the Cameron Corner , has no or almost no vegetation, but is an important site for fossils from the late Pleistocene . It is located on the southern edge of the Strzelecki Desert . The Moppa-Collina-Channel connects it with Lake Blanche , another large salt lake northwest of Lake Callabonna.

The dingo fence runs along the west bank on the southernmost part of the salt lake.

history

The first pastoralists in the area were the Ragless brothers in 1881 , who moved here from the Flinders Range and staked out a sheep pen. In January 1892, Fred Ragless accidentally found a series of giant skeletons embedded in the dry surface of the salt lake. Then an expedition was equipped, which z. T. financed by Sir Thomas Elder and Edward Charles Stirling , then director of the South Australian Museum . On a number of visits, Stirling and AH Zietz secured a large number of Diprotodon and thunderbird skeletons . In 1901 the southern end of the lake was designated as a fossil reserve and public access was restricted.
