The Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness is a wilderness area of almost 620 square kilometers in the US state of Washington . It is located in the Okanogan and Wenatchee National Forests . The area borders the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area and the North Cascades National Park as well as the Stephen Mather Wilderness to the northwest. It was designated as a protected area on land of the old Chelan Division of the Washington Forest Reserve with the passage of the Washington Wilderness Act of 1984 and is now part of both the Okanogan and Wenatchee National Forests.

Habitats

There are 63 lakes in the area, many of which are too small to ever have been named. The lakes are also often at high altitudes to which no hiking trail leads. The wilderness area comprises a mixture of dense forests, meadows, alpine slopes, geological features and high altitudes. The light forest below the tree line is home to bears and mule deer. Much of the area is often covered in snow between mid or late October to late June.

Hiking trails

The Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness is estimated to be 312 kilometers of hiking trails. The paths are rather safe ascent to high valleys and crag glaciers with lakes. The south-facing slopes drop steeply from the high elevations to the Lake Chelan Valley. All starting points on the south side (on Lake Chelan) can only be reached via a regular ferry or private boats. Paths that reach the area from the west first pass through North Cascades National Park or Lake Chelan National Recreation Area .
