The Stephen Mather Wilderness is 634,614 acres (256,819 hectares) of wilderness area named in honor of Stephen Mather , the first director of the National Park Service . It is located partly in the North Cascades National Park , partly in the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area and partly in the Ross Lake National Recreation Area in the North Cascades in Washington State . The closest location is Marblemount , approximately 4 mi (6.4 km) southwest of the area boundary.

The Stephan Mather Wilderness consists of three units: 505,000 acres (204,366 hectares) of the North Cascades National Park, which comprises a total of 504,614 acres (204,210 hectares) of designated wilderness; 117,600 acres (47,591 hectares) of Ross Lake National Recreation Area, a narrow patch of land just east of the national park that contains 74,000 acres (29,947 hectares) of designated wilderness; 62,000 acres (25,091 ha) of Lake Chelan National Recreation Area, located on the southeast corner of the national park, with 56,000 acres (22,662 ha) of designated wilderness.

The Stephen Mather Wilderness offers protected habitats for a variety of animal species, including elk , mule deer , wolf , mountain goat , elk and bighorn sheep . In addition come wolverines , bats , ducks , hawks and sparrow hawks , owls , frogs , loons , chipmunks , coyotes , squirrels , bears , hawks and eagles spread before.

Approximately 28 species and subspecies of fish have been identified in the Skagit , Nooksack and Chilliwack River basins , including the endangered bull trout and anadromous coastal cutthroat trout , dolly varden trout , steelhead trout and five species of salmon.

In addition to the bull trout, the northern spotted owl is one of the threatened and endangered animal species in the area .

Common activities in the Stephen Mather Wilderness include hiking, camping, nature watching, climbing, and hunting. There are approximately 390 mi (628 km) of hiking trails in the wilderness, including the Pacific Crest Trail , which traverses the southeast for approximately 13 mi (21 km). A large part of the area can only be reached by hikes lasting several days, which are often combined with climbing tours due to the remoteness and lack of paths.
