The Lake Mapourika is a lake on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The Lake Mapourika is located approximately 90 km southwest of Hokitika and 6 km north of the Franz Josef / Waiau and 9 km south of the small settlement of Okarito removed, on the west coast to the Tasman Sea lies. The lake has a length of 5.1 km and a maximum width of 3.9 km and extends over an area of around 8.5 km². The New Zealand State Highway 6 passes on its southeastern side, making the lake directly accessible to travelers.
The lake, whose catchment area covers around 90 km², is fed by Potters Creek and MacDonalds Creek as well as various small streams. Drainage is via the Ōkārito River , which has its origin in the lake.
Administratively, the lake belongs to the West Coast region and is part of the Westland National Park .
geology
The lake was created by the Franz Josef Glacier when it retreated inland around 14,000 years ago.
climate
The mean annual temperature in the area is 12 ° C and the amount of rain per year can be assumed to be around 5000 mm (4950 mm (1989)).
