The 1275 km² Westland National Park (Maori: Tai Poutini ) was established in 1960 and stretches from the west coast up to Mount Tasman, 3498 m high in the New Zealand Alps . Due to the steep gradient, several glaciers flow down from the mountains to up to 200 m above sea level (and a few kilometers from the ocean), the most famous are the Franz Josef Glacier and the Fox Glacier . There is a unique coastal rainforest on the very rainy coast . Together with Fiordland National Park , Mount Cook and Mount Aspiring National Park , Westland National Park forms the so-called Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area . Since 1990, the area is part of the World Heritage of UNESCO .
