The Ōkārito River is a 17 km long river in the West Coast region of the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The river has its origin at the outflow of Lake Mapourika , which is located around 10 km south of the settlement Ōkārito and 8 km southeast of the coast to the Tasman Sea . From its place of origin, the river runs on the eastern edge of the northern part of Westland National Park and flows into the lagoon after 17 river kilometers at the southern end of the Ōkārito Lagoon . At low tide you can optically follow the course of the river in the area of the lagoon up to the confluence with the Tasman Sea, but not at high tide. The mouth of the river with the outflow of the lagoon into the Tasman Sea is indicated on maps.

Since the flood of March 1967, the Ōkārito River has also been fed by the upper part of the Waitangitāhuna River , whose water finds its way over Lake Wahapo and its outflows ( Zalas Creek , channel for generating electricity) into the Ōkārito River .
