The Lake Wahapo is a lake on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The Lake Wahapo is located approximately 82 km southwest of Hokitika and 16 km north-northeast of Franz Josef / Waiau , 7 km south-east of the small settlement of Okarito removed, on the west coast to the Tasman Sea lies. The lake has a length of 2.6 km and a maximum width of 1.2 km and extends over an area of around 2.3 km². The New Zealand State Highway 6 passes on its southern side, making the lake directly accessible to travelers.
The lake, whose catchment area covers around 90 km², is fed by the Waitangitāhuna River . The drainage takes place via an approximately 1 km long section of the Zalas Creek to the Ōkārito River , as well as via a canal that leads to a power station and also ends in the Ōkārito River .
Administratively, the lake belongs to the West Coast region .
history
The Waitangitāhuna River was until 19 December 2018 Waitangitaona River called and is also listed on maps in some way. A flood in March 1967 diverted the river to Lake Wahapo and divided the river in two. The upper, southern part now feeds the lake.
