Lake McKenzie ( Boorangoora in the Aboriginal language of the Butchulla tribe ) is a shallow groundwater lake on Fraser Island in Queensland , Australia . It is part of the Great Sandy National Park .
The lake is about six kilometers from the Kingfisher Resort . It is 1200 meters long and up to 930 meters wide. The water surface is 150 hectares.
With the white sand and deep blue water, the lake is one of the biggest attractions on the island. Picnic and camping sites, as well as barbecue and toilet facilities have been set up for visitors. In order to avoid pollution of the absolutely clear water, bathers should avoid sunscreen and soap.
history
The Aborigines from the Butchulla tribe, the native people of the island, gathered at the lake to make decisions. They called it the Water of Wisdom .
In March 1944, during World War II , a second military camp was set up on Fraser Island on the shores of the lake to train paratroopers . The conditions on the island are similar to those on all Pacific islands, so it offered a site on which the soldiers could practice in order to liberate islands occupied by Japanese. It was closed again in the same year.
