Lake Okataina

The Lake Okataina is the northernmost and largest of four small lakes between Lake Rotorua and Lake Tarawera in Region Bay of Plenty on the North Island of New Zealand . The other three are Lake Rotokakahi (Green Lake), Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake), and Lake Okareka . All are in the area of the western edge of the Okataina caldera .

In contrast to many other lakes, the lake is completely surrounded by forest made up of native tree species. It has neither inflow nor outflow. Perhaps for this reason, the height of the water level has fluctuated by 5 m in the last 30 years.

The lake is accessible via a road via Hinehopu on the south shore of Lake Rotoiti . At the end of the road there is a large sandy beach, a large expanse of grass and the privately owned Okataina Lodge .

The area around the lodge is home to numerous derby wallabies that were introduced from Australia in the 19th century .
