The Lake Rotokakahi or Green Lake is a smaller four lakes between Lake Rotorua and Lake Tarawera in the region Bay of Plenty on the North Island of New Zealand . The other three lakes are Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake), Lake Okareka, and Lake Okataina . They are on the western edge of the Okataina caldera .
The Māori name for the lake is derived from its abundance of shellfish . The outflow of the lake leads over the waterfalls of Te Wairoa into Lake Tarawera. The lake appears emerald green from the air because of its flat, sandy bottom . The water level is 397 m above sea level and 21 m above the water level of neighboring Lake Tikitapu. The lake is viewed by the Māori as a tapu and therefore remains largely undisturbed. It belongs to the area of the Iwi Te Arawa from Tuhourangi .
