Te Wairoa also known as The Buried Village is a place west of Lake Tarawera on the North Island of New Zealand . It is 14 km southeast of Rotorua on Tawera Road.

Two other lakes, Lake Rotokakahi and Lake Tikitapu, are west of the town.

In the village inhabited by Māori and Europeans, visitors to the Pink and White Terraces were accommodated . The village was destroyed on June 10, 1886 by a massive eruption of the Mount Tarawera volcano . At least 100 people died, many of them in other villages closer to the volcano.

The village is now open to the public and shows excavated ruins of the houses. Excavated objects are exhibited in a museum and the history of the eruption is shown.

The land of Te Wairoa belonged to the Smith family for three generations. The first generation bought the land from the first missionary in Te Wairoa named Seymour. The family has been excavating the site ever since.
