The Mount Tarawera is a volcano in the District Rotorua Lakes region Bay of Plenty on the North Island of New Zealand . It is part of the Okataina Caldera .

geography

The volcano is located about 24 km southeast of Rotorua and 23 km southwest of Kawerau on the southeast side of Lake Tarawera . Two other lakes, Lake Rotomahana and Lake Rerewhakaaitu, are located on the southwest and south sides of the volcano.

history

In the early morning hours of June 10, 1886, the Tarawera broke out with an earthquake and an ash cloud that reached up to 10 km in height. In just six hours of the eruption, villages, hotels, farms and forests all around were buried under streams of rock and mud. An estimated 120 people were killed. The eruption left a roughly 17 km long crack in the earth. The Pink and White Terraces , known as a tourist destination at the time , were completely destroyed by the eruption and the Waimangu Valley with the Waimangu Geyser, which was active between 1900 and 1904, was recreated.

description

The volcano's original peak erupted in the June 1886 eruption and formed the three peaks, Ruawahia Peak , Tarawera Peak, and Wahanga Peak . The highest part of the volcano is 1111  m above sea level. The crater is formed by many crevices and fissures and stretches for six kilometers from northeast to southwest.

tourism

Mount Tarawera can be visited on 4.5-hour guided tours, as well as the remains of the Māori village of Te Wairoa , which is known as " The Buried Village " in New Zealand, which was buried and uncovered by the ashes of the volcano . There is also a museum there.
