Okataina Caldera

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Okataina Caldera (also Haroharo Caldera ) is the 16 km × 26 km caldera of an active volcano in the Taupo Volcanic Zone in the Rotorua District in the Bay of Plenty region on the North Island of New Zealand .

The volcano last erupted around 1314 and on June 10, 1886 at Mount Tarawera . Another four eruptions have occurred in the past ten thousand years.

Around 100 people were killed in the last outbreak. The mountain was split into three peaks. The sintered terraces Pink and White Terraces , already known as a tourist destination, also from Europe, were completely destroyed by the eruption. In the then destroyed town of Te Wairoa you can visit the ruins of the huts and a museum about the eruption.

The Haroharo and Tarawera mountain ranges were also formed by the volcanic activity.

Today there are numerous lakes in the area of the caldera, the most important of which are Lake Tarawera , Lake Okataina and the eastern part of Lake Rotoiti . The neighboring lakes, Lake Rotorua and Lake Rotoma, are located in their own calderas.
