The Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area is a national reserve in Canada . It stretches for 140 km along the northern shore of Lake Superior in Ontario , more precisely between Thunder Bay in the west and Bottle Point in the east. The southern border lies on the border between Canada and the USA , which runs through the lake , where the Isle Royale National Park begins. The sanctuary and the Fathom Five National Marine Park , a second National Marine Conservation Area , are managed by Parks Canada .

The establishment of the park in October 2007, which Prime Minister Stephen Harper had announced at short notice, was preceded by several years of negotiations, as had investigations since 1997. In 2002, the associated Canada National Marine Conservation Areas Act was passed.

The First Nations were represented by Wilfred King, the Grand Chief of the region on northern Lake Superior. They enforced in 2006 that the provisions of the Treaty of 1850 known as the Robinson Superior Treaty were observed. Around two thirds of the population in the area voted in a referendum for the maximum extension that was implemented when the park was founded.

The park covers around 10,000 km² of water including the banks, plus around 60 km² of islands. In this area any extraction of raw materials is strictly prohibited, although the local First Nations are allowed to fish according to older contractual agreements.

In 2009, the eight Wilson Islands off Rossport were purchased for $ 7.4 million, which were previously privately owned. They cover an area of 1900 hectares. The governments of Canada and Ontario, as well as private organizations of Canada and the USA, contributed funds. The purchase was supported by the local Pays Plat First Nation , which plays a significant role in protecting the island. This also applies to the rock carvings and the Sibley Peninsula , which contains artifacts from the Paleo-Indians and subsequent cultures.
