Tithe barn

The Zehntscheune, a former stately granary, is located at Marktplatz 4 in the town of Merkendorf in the Franconian Lake District in Middle Franconia .

construction

The three-storey solid building from 1726 was probably built on the foundation walls of the Egidien chapel, which was demolished in the 16th century because it was dilapidated. The previous building was built at the end of the 16th century, but burned down at the end of the Thirty Years' War , caused by the withdrawing Swedish troops. The current building dates from 1726.

history

In the past, the tithe that the farmers in the Margraviate of Ansbach had to hand in was collected and stored there. Until 1851 it was used as a granary. The tithe barn is located in the immediate vicinity of the listed Steingruberhaus . A roof turret with a bell crowns the solid white building, which is a listed building .

Todays use

From 1851 to 1991 the building was used as the town hall. After the city administration had moved into the new town hall , the tithe barn stood empty for two years. In 1993 the Merkendorf Heimat- und Krautlandmuseum was set up on the two upper floors. It shows a cross-section through the living and working world of a small arable town . The museum is run by the local heritage association founded in 1949. The former tithe barn also houses a driving school from Gunzenhausen . Events of the local cultural association KiM - Kultur in Merkendorf take place on the ground floor .
