The market square is a square in the central Franconian town of Merkendorf in the Franconian Lake District .

location

The square is located within the medieval city ​​wall and forms the center of the old town of Merkendorf .

The main street , which runs from the upper gate to the lower gate within the city wall, widens in the middle to the market square, from which the Schulstraße, the Brauhausstraße and the Adlerstraße branch off.

history

In the Middle Ages, the annual markets took place on the market square. During the Nazi era , the square was called Hindenburg Square . The old town festival and annual parish fair take place on the square every two years.

Buildings

On the market square is the historic town hall with herb fountain, the building of the former Hellein brewery , the former office of the governor of the Principality of Ansbach and the former tithe barn . The war memorial commemorates the fallen soldiers of Merkendorf in the two world wars. Until the construction of the war memorial in 1921, there was a pipe well in front of the office building.
