Gatehouse at the lower gate

The lower gate is two-story and has a steep hipped roof with a crowning lantern. It dates from the late Middle Ages and was converted to Baroque style in 1785 . At the gatehouse which borders Torwachhaus in half-timbered style , where every foreign wagon to 1935 the paving inches had to be paid. It is the only still existing gatehouse in Merkendorf. However, today's building is a replica of the original, which had to be demolished in 1980 due to dilapidation. It was rebuilt true to the original. Like in the lower gate, there is an apartment in it.

Up until the middle of the 20th century, a bell rang in the roof lamp early, noon and evening.

The lower gate with the gatehouse is one of the landmarks of the herb town and a popular photo opportunity.
