At the 2012 Summer Olympics in the British capital, London , a total of 18 cycling competitions were held, nine each for women and men.

From August 2nd to 10th there were ten decisions in track cycling in the London Olympic Velodrome and two decisions in BMX in the London Velopark , two decisions in mountain biking on August 11 and 12 in Hadleigh Farm and from July 28 to August 1 in Central London (with start and finish on The Mall ) two road races and two individual time trials around Hampton Court Palace .

The competition program for women and men was identical. While the program for BMX, mountain biking and road cycling remained the same as in Beijing in 2008 , the IOC had significantly changed the competition program in track cycling. The IOC decided on December 10, 2009 at the meeting in Lausanne to cancel the individual pursuit and the points race for women and men, as well as the Madison for men. New to the program were Omnium for women and men and Keirin , team sprint and team pursuit for women. This implemented the requirement to create more equality in track cycling. Also new was the regulation that only one athlete per NOK was allowed in each individual track cycling competition .

In the final phase of the race, the Swiss racing driver Fabian Cancellara suffered a serious fall at the head of the race , who was also the favorite for the subsequent time trial. Despite injuries, he started the time trial but was unable to defend his gold medal in Beijing.

Originally René Enders, Maximilian Levy and Stefan Nimke were nominated for the German team . However, Nimke injured himself in the last warm-up training before the start, so that substitute driver Förstemann was deployed at short notice and Levy had to take third place in the team, which he was unfamiliar with.

In the first round of the competition, the Chinese drivers Gong and Guo set a new world record over 32.422 s, undercutting the old record set by Miriam Welte and Kristina Vogel at the World Railroad Championships in April 2012.

In this first lap, the times achieved in it determine the composition of the final races for the first four places, Welte and Vogel drove the third-best time, which qualified them for the race for bronze. But since the English duo of Victoria Pendleton and Jessica Varnish, who had achieved the second-best time, were put back in eighth place due to a substitution error, the two German drivers made it to the final. In this race they initially lost to the Chinese women Gong and Guo, who, however , were relegated because of a mistake , so that Welte and Vogel won gold.

During the qualification, the three British athletes Danielle King, Laura Trott and Joanna Rowsell set a new world record of 3: 15.669 minutes and thus improved their own world record from the UCI Track World Championships 2012 in April. In the final, the British trio improved their one and a half hour old world record to 3: 14.051 minutes.

Track cycling

Qualification criteria

188 athletes will take part in the competitions, 84 women and 104 men. Each NOK could achieve a maximum of nine quota places for men and seven for women. A maximum of one athlete or one team from a NOC can start in all competitions. The following qualification criteria applied to both sexes. The UCI track cycling nations ranking, which included the results of the 2011 and 2012 UCI track cycling world championships , the 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 world cups and the 2011 and 2012 continental championships, was decisive for the allocation of quota places .

In the team sprint and in the team pursuit, the ten best NOKs, and in the Omnium, the 18 best NOKs received a quota place. All teams qualified in the team sprint were also given a quota place for the Sprint and Keirin competitions; in addition, eight quota places were awarded in these disciplines via the nation ranking. The number of NOKs from a continental association was limited for each competition, so that NOKs from different continental associations are eligible to start in all competitions.

Road cycling

Qualification criteria

212 athletes will take part in the competitions, including 67 women and 145 men. Each NOK could achieve a maximum of four quota places for women and five for men. The UCI road cycling nations world rankings were decisive for the allocation of quota places.

Road racing

For women, the NOKs in places one to five got four, those in places four to thirteen got three and those in places 14 to 24 got two quota places. The winner of the continental championships from Africa , Asia and America each got a quota place . If she was already qualified via the nations world rankings, the next athlete, whose NOK had not achieved a quota place, moved up.

For men, the NOKs in places one to ten got five and those in places 11 to 15 got four quota places. In addition, quota places were given to the best NOKs of the individual continental associations. To this end, those NOKs were first sorted out that had already achieved quota positions in the world rankings. Then the best-placed NOK from Africa got three and the second-placed two quota places. From America, the three best-placed NOKs each got three and those in places four to six got two quota places. From Asia, the best-placed NOK got three and those in places two to four got two quota places each. From Europe, the NOKs in places one to six got three and those in places 7 to 16 got two quota places. From Oceania , the best-placed NOK finally got two quota places. The last quota places went to the first two athletes of the continental championships of 2011 from Africa, Asia and America or, if they were already able to achieve a quota place through their NOK, the next following athletes without a quota place.

Individual time trial

A maximum of two athletes per NOK could compete in the individual time trial. Only athletes who have competed in the road race may be used.

For women, the first 15 NOKs in the world rankings were allowed to provide one athlete each. Further starting places were given to the first ten athletes in the individual time trial of the 2011 UCI Road World Championships . In the case of men, however, a world ranking list of nations should be consulted specifically for individual time trials, but here too the general world ranking was used. The first 15 NOKs in this ranking were allowed to nominate one athlete each, as well as the best not yet qualified NOK from Oceania and Africa, the two best from Asia, the four best from America and the seven best from Europe. Further quota places were given to the ten best placed athletes in the individual time trial of the UCI World Championships 2011 .

BMX

Qualification criteria

48 athletes will take part in the competitions, including 16 women and 32 men. Two quota places were reserved for the host NOK and the UCI was able to allocate another two quota places by invitation. A maximum of two women and three men can participate per NOK. The UCI nations world rankings on May 28, 2012 were used to allocate the quota places.

For women, the NOKs in places one to four in the world rankings got two quota places each and those in places five to seven got one quota place each. The three best athletes of the UCI BMX World Championships, whose NOK could not achieve a quota place on the world rankings, each got a quota place. For men, the NOKs in places one to five in the world rankings each got three quota places, those in places six to eight got two quota places and those in places nine to eleven got one quota place each. The best six athletes of the UCI BMX World Championships, whose NOK could not achieve a quota place on the world rankings, each got a quota place.

Based on the positions at the BMX World Championships, Brazil, Lithuania and Venezuela won a quota place for women and South Africa, Switzerland, Belgium, the Philippines, Brazil and Denmark for men. There was also a starting place for the host Great Britain. Since regular athletes from all continents were able to qualify, the UCI did not assign any starting places by invitation. Instead, based on the results at the World Championships, Latvia for women and Ecuador for men received the quota places that became vacant.

Mountain bike

Qualification criteria

80 athletes will take part in the competitions, 30 women and 50 men. Each NOK can use a maximum of two women and three men. In the women's category, the NOKs, who were ranked one to eight in the UCI Olympic qualification world rankings, each got two quota places and those in ninth to 18th place each got one quota place. The winner of the continental championships from Africa, Asia, America and Oceania each received one quota place. For men, the NOKs, who are in the world rankings from one to five, each got three quota places, those in places six to 13 each got two quota places and the NOKs in places 14 to 24 each got one quota place. The two first-placed athletes of the continental championships from Africa, Asia, America and Oceania were each given a quota place. If the NOKs of the winners of the continental championships had already achieved a quota place above the world rankings, the right to start was passed on to the next following athlete without a quota place. The cut-off date for the world rankings was May 23, 2012.
