Gillian Carleton (born December 3, 1989 in Scarborough ) is a former Canadian cyclist .

Athletic career

Gillian Carleton started track cycling in 2011 after being hit by a truck while training on the road. In the same year she became Canadian sprint runner-up . In November 2011 she suffered during the course of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Astana a broken pelvis after a fall during the points driving . Nevertheless, she finished the race and finished fourth. At the 2012 World Cup in London , she finished second in the team pursuit together with Jasmin Glaesser and Tara Whitten . At the UCI Track World Championships 2012 in Melbourne , the Canadian team came third in the same line-up.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Gillian Carleton won the bronze medal in the team pursuit together with Tara Whitten and Jasmin Glaesser. The following year, she finished third in the team pursuit at the World Railroad Championships in Minsk, together with Laura Brown and Jasmin Glaesser . In the Canadian track competition Challenge International sur Piste , she won the 500 meter time trial , the Omnium and the single pursuit .

In 2013 Carleton won the bronze medal at the World Track Championships with Laura Brown and Jasmin Glaesser .

Private

Since puberty, Gillian Carleton suffered from severe depression , which initially manifested itself in anorexia . To combat depression, she started triathlon training. In later years she tried to face her illness with alcohol , cigarettes , drugs , sleeping pills , antidepressants and hard training. She also slit her legs.

In 2015, Carleton retired from cycling to complete her degree in biology and psychology .

Honors

In December 2013, Gillian Carleton was named Canada's Cyclist of the Year .
