James David "Jimmy" Watkins (born August 26, 1982 in Bakersfield ) is an American track cyclist who specializes in short-term disciplines.

Athletic career

In his youth Jimmy Watkins was active as a track and field athlete , for example he started as a 100-meter runner in the Junior Olympics, and he played baseball and American football . He trained to be a firefighter and became a “hotshot”, a member of the elite group for fighting bush and forest fires, whose members must be particularly physically fit. Watkins therefore began cycling at the age of 21 to train his endurance. After all, he was so good that he became a competitive cyclist, although he remained a full-time firefighter.

In 2008, Jimmy Watkins was a three-time US champion in the sprint , keirin and team sprint . In 2010 he was a second time champion in the team sprint and runner-up in the sprint and in 2011 again champion in the team sprint. At the Pan American Championships in 2009 Watkins won the gold medal in the 1000-meter time trial , having won the silver medal in the Keirin the year before. In 2011 he was the Pan-American runner-up in the team sprint and finished fourth in the Keirin. At the UCI Track World Championships in Melbourne in 2012 , he finished 16th in the team sprint, together with Michael Blatchford and Kevin Mansker . He also set national records over 200 meters (flying start), 1000 meters (standing start) and 750 meters (team sprint). He was trained by the Briton Jamie Staff .

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Jimmy Watkins started in the sprint and finished sixth.
