The Lalbag Fort ( Bengali : লালবাগের কেল্লা , lālbāger kellā ; Anglicized: Lalbagh , German: fortress of the Red Garden ; also known as "Aurangabad's fortress") is an unfinished fortress from the Mughal period on the Buriganga River in the southwest of Dhaka in Bangladesh . Work began in 1678 under Prince Muhammad Azam, during his 15-month vice reign over Bengal . His father, Mughal Mughal Aurangzeb , appointed Subadar Shaista Khan as his successor. He did not continue the work on the fortress, which is why it was never completely completed. The fortress includes a two-story conference hall (including a hammam ), a mausoleum , a mosque and a water reservoir. The fortress is surrounded by 1.30 m thick walls and has three entrance gates. The centrally located mausoleum is dedicated to Bibi Pari, Subadar Shaista Khan's favorite daughter, and was not completed until 1688.
